If you cook early then chicken, if later in the week just catch some fish and we will chow on that.

I can cook anything that you like.

Thanks Bob for the report.

since there are teethy fish in the bay, do you always use steel leader, or only switch when you start seeing the mean guys?

Most of the fish do not require steel leaders, but the ones that do, really do.

Zed 09-02-2015 11:29 AM

Never. I go until I have no more leader left then just straight tie spectra.

Even in wfo sierra losses are low personally.

Whale shark and turtles hanging around. Yt and dorado seen in area. Also Skippies. You just never know, water temps were 88 degrees and winds were less than 10mph wind temps 85 low at night 105 high. Tight lines, Disney Land trip is coming soon, tight lines.

Roberto thanks for an awesome weekend! I had a blast, even in the 107 degree heat, even though I got part of thumb chewed off by a triggerfish. Can't wait for October, super stoked to fish the big island. One plan is to take a panga to the big island in the a.m., fish all day and camp out there, then have the panga pick us up the next afternoon. Should be absolutely epic!!!

Other possibilities beckon--chase yellowtail in Gonzaga proper, fish the pristine waters of Punta Final. I think my head is about to explode!

Any pictures of these trips?

HobieScot 09-03-2015 06:11 PM

What island is the big island? The only big island I know is Hawaii and that's a little to far of a panga trip for me lol

Are the Pangas big enough to take;
kayaks,
fishing gears,
camping gears,
cooler/s and passengers?

Or does he make several trips?

Do we sleep under sky or in a tent?

makobob 09-03-2015 08:06 PM

The island is San Luis Gonzaga and it is about 4.5 miles from my place.
As to what to take to the island less is always better. Take just what you need.

That's a good question. For an overnight trip, I'm thinking I bring the kayak, a couple of rods, small box of lures, sleeping bag (no tent but maybe a lightweight tarp in case of unexpected rain), water (2 gallons/per person?), and food for two days.

I doubt there'd be room (or need) for a cooler, but I guess that depends on how many people go. I'll probably pack like I'm backpacking (every ounce counts and not taking anything that isn't absolutely ESSENTIAL). I may bring my jet boil with some oil/spices to cook fish.

I'm not taking anything I couldn't carry on my kayak to paddle back to the mainland in case our ride back doesn't show up :svengo:

Dannowar 09-03-2015 08:44 PM

A panga will not fit kayaks

Mahigeer 09-03-2015 10:36 PM

I gather the kayaks will be towed here.

I have seen it inside the Panga at Cedros Island pictures. No overnight camping there.

According to Bob, it is best NOT to sleep on the floor, especially if you are not in a tent. Little critters, you know.

I think being the first time, I will pass on the Panga trip.

I have been watching various YouTube videos of this kayaker---Cornish Shore and Kayak Fisherman.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5nveCDPqsE

In the above video which is quite informative, he says that in order to operate a VHF radio, a one day course must be taken.
Is that a requirement for US, or maybe where he is in England?
What about Mexico?
It has been a while since I read the manual and I will look at again.
Anybody have any information on this?

svendawg 09-04-2015 08:23 AM

Not to my knowledge

I think you are confusing VHF radio (marine) with HAM radios. Ham operators require a class to operate HAM

Thanks for clarification, I am aware of the differences, that is why it surprised me and I thought I ask.

He has sent me a reply saying he does not think I need one here, but for me to check locally to be sure.

Not sure if anyone is looking to carpool for the October trip. I live in Simi Valley if anyone is in the area. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,

Robert

There is a military person that is going to join us and he needs to carpool. His name is Travis Ohrtman a great guy. I will have him get a hold of you.
