oceanside seat trial!
 

took the yak out this afternoon with my brand new seat. absolutely love being able to just grab a tackle box or two without having to open the hatch then reclose it to work then open again to stow.

It's so incredibly comfortable i almost forgot i was in my yak and able to concentrate 100% on my presentation. resulting in this guy!

pinned on a live 12" lizard fish (with stinger hook) and also played with a dropper and squid on my new rockfish rig.

just be careful on the sculpin if you fit it like that between your legs you might end up with a day just my 0.2

Nice day out, but I have to agree that rattlesnakes and crotches don't mix well.

That's 100x better than any day fishing I've ever had. I would be thrilled, rock on man

the rattler was way up towards the cup holder and i was scooted back and had my hand on the line pulling him away. i wasnt going to get nut checked by that thing! :D

oh and just an FYI, besides liking the storage, the seat review is a little sarcastic. :cheers1:

I once put a legal hali between my legs and when it jumped, snapped its jaw and caught my leg it hurt like a mother f.........!!!!

I've caught several Sculpin and that is one fish that I would never put on the deck of my kayak. I've seen grown men get stung by those little critters, they shed tears like a little girl who just lost her bunny to the local coyote.

PS sculpin danger is over rated unless you are allergic...but I would want to find out the hard way...lol:reel:

Good Job....I dont think many give O'Side the credit it deserves. How bout around the corner on the base side? I launch from there, but usually dont hang around, I did drag a BH a few times with no results. As for sculpin, I have handled them with bare hands, trick is to fold down spines sliding your hand from head towards tail and be sure and not let up,. (or maybe I just got lucky).

Get rid of the tape measure......washing it down with fresh water when you get home will not keep it from getting rusted.

Handle Sculpin just like bass, grab em by the lower lip so the spines are pointed away from you. Nice variety there.

I'd disagree, and I'm not allergic.
Perhaps you've only been grazed by the spines. I've been grazed, probably twice, it hurts, but it is tolerable. Then I've been stuck twice, 1st time fishing Horseshoe Kelp, where the partyboat had stocked up on rattlesnakes before fishing surface again. I found the only good sized bait of the day in the tank, dropped it near the gunny sacks, went to retrieve it, and got stuck hard. I knew right away what stuck me, but I'd never been stuck before. Within 5 minutes my hand blew up like a balloon, throbbed intensely with every heart beat, and hurt like a mother. I used to be prone to seasickness, but would always fish to keep my mind off of it. This pain was so intense, it was the only time I'd ever stopped fishing, when possible to do so. I only eat between boat movements :)
I also got stuck pretty good, the 1st year on the kayak, in Mission Bay. He got me in the hand, while I was contemplating keeping him. Pretty much ended our day, painful and throbbing the whole paddle back to Dana Landing.
I also got stuck pretty bad in the foot by a stingray, while surf fishing off of Torrey Pines, every bit as intense, maybe even more so, than the 1st Sculpin to stick me. The pain increased the whole time, until I put the foot in a pot of hot water. Also, I think part of the barb was left in me. I had pain and swelling for at least a week.
Hot water as hard as you can stand it, is the best relief when stuck by either a Sculpin or Stingray. You'll feel like you've left hell and at least made it to purgatory.

Gotta agree with GregAndrew about the sculpin. They have a big ol' mouth and not much teeth, great for lip grabbing. I have never been stuck by a sculpin but when I was a kid I saw my dad take a spine in to his thumb while filleting one. I never will forget the sight of his swelling hand and the red lines moving up his arm. Don't be shy about giving them an agressive "hair cut". Dykes, pliers, needle nose will all work but if you're targeting them a pair of strong kitchen shears are best. Hold them by the bottom lip and cut of all the dorsal, anal, and pectoral fin spines. I don't do just the tips, I pretty much take the whole damn fin off. Do this as you land each fish, befor they get in your crotch, and you won't have to worry about getting stuck. Mike
