In the market for a new yak

I have owned a stealth and an x factor , both I have enjoyed and was pleased with. I'm very comfortable on the water and now want a yak that is fast and moves well. I'm a big guy at 250 pounds and 5' 10". Is an extreme the way to go or an trident ? Or is there a yak I'm missing . Please no comments about hobies ! Ya I know you guys are the cool kids ! But I'm good with paddling with my arms.

Thanks
Johnny

i dont know much about big kayaks (i'm only 5'7 and 140lbs). but i heard alot of good things about the Cobra fish n dive. that's an option. and i'd say stay clear from the scrambler, scrambler xt, and scupper pro. those kayaks are real narrow.

If you like to paddle -suggest you get a bigger model like Greg Andrews...pm him for details...

YakMedic 07-28-2012 03:01 PM

Another option for a good paddling kayak is the Wilderness Systems Tarpon. Both the 140 and 160 meet your requirements.

I have a nice trident 15 for sale. The tridents are nice and fast due to being so long i belive 15 feet 11 inches is what mine measures (idk why they didnt just call it a 16 lol) they are narrow but still have stability. Also has the rodpod which is nice for landings for your poles and the sonar shield seems to keep the fishfinder dry in wet surf launches.

Get an adventure and just don't plug in the mirage drive. :D

Tarpon 160 is pretty fast. Just keep in mind with speed comes a lost of stability.

I will not sell out to hobie. But nice try !

But you are the 2nd that has brought up the tarpon.

Trident

I love my trident 15. Punches through the surf great and is easy to handle during landings. My only gripe with it is the bow is far away for those of use that are 5'9" to 6'. Be sure to use longer rods so that you can clear the bow.

A x factor would be perfect for your size, stability is great but u sacrifice speed. Well worth it if your not in a hurry

Ocean Kayak Ultra 4.3 or 4.7

Amish Ed 07-29-2012 10:12 PM

I'm 6'2", 250lbs. I liked my T140 and am saving for another. Faster than the Xfactor and plenty stable. It does lack the inside storage between the legs of the Xfactor or the Ocean Kayak boats.

Know a place that have them for demo ? OEX in sunset does not. But i will be going there to try the extreme and the trident .

JohnnyCope 07-29-2012 10:42 PM

I would like to thank all that have taken the time to put in there to cents.

Johnny

Andy should have a T140, he had one a few weeks ago. Did you ask if he had one?

ctrujillo 07-30-2012 05:47 AM

What about the wilderness ride 135? Looks stable not shure on speed

My 2 cents. I have a OK T13 (6' 2", 215 lbs.) and my buddy has the Extreme (6' 4" 260 lbs +/-) and he can out run me. S.O.B. It seems to be pretty fast for a paddler.

But then again, I'm really thinking about going to the dark side. Having your hands free seems to be the way to go, sorry:D

Go with a tarpon 160 little stability but quick cuts through surf

With the way things are going there may be a new law which forces yaks to be hands free !
