Throwing around the Iron.. recommendations?
Went out recently and tried throwing a Salas Iron with my Calstar 8ft rod and an Avet JX w/ 40lb(Izorline XXX). Casting distance was really pathetic and felt pretty awkward trying to sling it from the yak. :jig:
What do you guys recommend for rod/reel/line selection so that I can actually get some distance? I would like to keep the high retrieve 6:1 ratio and I've heard regular Izorline works pretty good but not sure if I should go with 30 or 40lb, thanks... |

Have you cleaned the spool bearings recently ? The avets don't like the kayak environment.
That combo should throw far. ------------------------- You could try a saltist 6.4:1 ratio, or a sealine 6:1 both of these reels cast excellent and handle the kayak environment. Izor XXX is good line, and so is Izor 1st. string. Both of them break way higher than their line rating. You could drop down to 30 lb. and still land most fish in the ocean. |
is it an mc model avet? have you serviced it lately? mine (non mc) cast pretty well

It's an Avet JX with MC, have had it for two seasons now (lightly used). Will check on the bearings but as mentioned already probably just need a lot more practice throwing from the yak.

The magnet pops right out, no need for a new frame. Take it out and you will be amazed at the difference.

Avet mag cast sucks. Even at 1 it's too much and you can't turn it all the way off.

I've been practicing at shelter Island off the rocks sitting down, definitely need to practice alot.

Casters that don't let out enough line from the tip to the jig before the toss can really limit their distance. Give it as much line as you can and leverage that too...
