Got a later start cause i had to fix some wiring on my battery to FF. Crowded launch and fishing zones. Reminds me why I dont fish la jolla on saturdays. Made some squid and made the peddle toward a zone i wanted to target whitefish and goats. Got both but nothing big. I had two big fish on but got rocked by both. Thanks papadave for the outback!

It's always a good day when you hit your target. Congrats dude.

I love whitefish! The meat melts in your mouth like butter.
They make the real good fish tacos. Good post. |
Neve tried whitefish. Whar type of areas do u target them? Nice catch btw
|
I will take a bag full of whitefish over a yellow tail any day. Nice haul :D

I found a rock pile with nothing but whitefish, caught 5 more but released some to get some variety in my limits.

Taco time!

couldn't you have caught 5 other whitefish to reach your limit of white fish to 10? I know that there's 3 rockfish you are not allowed to keep, I see their picture on google images and most of them are like orange/yellow colored rockfish, how can you tell since the red one you caught kinda looks the same a canary or yelloweye rockfish?
|
About the question about the three rock fish that you can't keep, I wouldn't worry about it. The rockfish that you can't keep in califorrnia are the yellow eye, cow cod and one other. They are really rare to catch and the cow cod are usually deeper like 300 plus feet. I've only seen them caught out on boats and a couple by Santa Rosa island and Mexico. The yellow eye and the other one are usually only caught up north like by Monterey bay and above. There might be more that I don't know of but the would be extremely rare from a kayak.

Hi life the canary and yellow eye do not have white chins. There body shape and the lateral lines give away alot.

Nope they are California whitefish... Salmon grouper are different

Nice collection, thanks for sharing. I caught several whitefish last year but hadn't heard they were that good so I released them. That won't happen again after reading this thread!

Whitefish
I see a lot of whitefish fishing Channel Islands. The bigger ones put up a good fight more fun than the rockfish that make up majority of catches.
Been told they make great ceviche. I've used it mostly in stew and risotto. |
