The Mirage drive is the heart of Mirage version of Hobie kayaks, and the reason why these kayaks are so expensive. The Mirage drive is the ingeniously engineered and efficient propulsion system that allows you to pedal the kayak like a bike using the large thigh and buttock muscles saving your arms and shoulders (for fishing). The Mirage drive is a separate unit that is inserted into the kayak hull and locks into place with two turn-knobs. Your feet rest on the bicycle style pedals and are held in place with adjustable straps (very similar to an exercise bike). If you want to go “old school” and paddle, a molded insert is included to plug into the Mirage drive slot.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

dude, sweet paint job! do you have a post on the process or can you make one?

FishNinjaY 07-02-2013 10:59 AM

what year is that Outback? Also, how did you mod the rudder? Just wondering if the drive is interchangeable with my current two Hobie Oasis drives (2013 model). That paint job is trip! :luxhello:

jbetanc 07-02-2013 11:08 AM

I did the paint job out of fear of sharks :). Some krylon plastic paint and a you tube video I watched, I will try to find and post link. The rudder mod is from a pic I saw, friend fabricated bracket per a cardboard template I made, this is an older outback before the folding rudder set up.

well you kind of have to do it all, right? it'd look odd to just paint the bottom/undersurface half camo? but, the camo hobie livewell is a bit over the top!

sharks can jump, I saw it on shark wk, and as for the bait tank, I like to match my shoes with my shirt sometimes, the extra bling :), had left over paint

If you are truly concerned about sharks, there are these ultrasonic bands that some surfers wear or have on their boards that effectively repel sharks. I'm not sure how long they last, and if they'd last as long as your average fishing session.. but there is technology out there, if you really are worried. (but, I'd also wonder if the device was repelling all fish, which I can do all on my own without any devices..lol)

Congrats on the sale.. hope you get out there again soon.

I am from the jaws era, just having fun, will get out on water again, thank you, I drive the 405 from lake forest to la everyday, much worse than a shark :)
