Trinidad rock fishing

I'm so excited to be going back up north to fish. Hopefully the weather is ok in sharktober. I'm going to be targeting bottom fish big blacks, lings and cabezon. I may still be there for the dungeness. Ill report my catches daily. Just might hit shelter cove for some late season salmon.

Sounds fun. My son is up there in college (Humboldt) and has had a chance to fish Trinidad Pier once. He pulled up some nice fish including a big ling, and said the fishing was awesome. He's gearing up for river fishing now for steelhead and trout during the rainy season. I'd love to go check it out. Stupid work, always taking up all my fishing time.

Lings off of piers? I've only fished the bottom up north a couple of times. Nothing like down here. Looking forward to the pics. Jim

Big ling off a pier? Can you say wide open??

alanw 10-10-2013 08:07 PM

I don't know about wide open for lings, a couple of locals were kinda surprised and said it was unusual to catch one off the pier. Although it was pretty wide open on greenlings and starfish :p

Cool story with it too, he was fishing frozen anchovies and got a birdsnest when casting out. He was messing around with the line trying to undo the mess when he felt something on the line. He dropped the rod and had to hand line it up! I guess all the movement he created with the line got the ling to bite on a dead bait, where I read they only eat live bait.

7" swimbaits, mooching rig with 4-8 oz lead, greenlings for bait. :) for cabezon I use thumper squid 6oz assist hooks.

Have fun up there, The lings are everywhere and jumbo blacks and cabezons. Head around the head to flat rock and fish that area and you should do pretty good.

As for lings eating dead frozen bait, hear about it all the time. They dont mind it all and will eat just about anything sitting in there face.

I know where to go Palmer point flat iron wash rock 1&2 there is another like 1 miles that holds big verms. I fish Trinidad for 4 seasons straight. This is why I'm stoked. Everything is huge there. Like catching the big blacks on light tackle.

Good luck, sorry was just giving some advice use to live there.

Oh I don't mean any harm I'm just excited. I lived her for 5 yrs myself. Did u ever make the paddle to palmers point? It's a trek, but well worth it u know like 40" lings ;)

Have fun and be safe, never made that paddle myself, usually would head down to the cape for bigger fish.

I've fished the cape 3 times. It's really tough to get out there and kayaking out because the winds pick up fast. Steamboat rock is closed as of now.

My sons and I recall Rock Cod fishing in Trinidad in the summer. We did it on a 6-pack boat. Wow.... this trip was so memorable, as we caught limits of delicious translucent-white-meat cod, but the highlight was that if you pick the right boat, some have crab traps.

We came back with 28 live Dungeness crabs! This was crazy! I ate 7 crabs in about 3 days. We had no freezer, so we just ate and ate and ate....

Well worth the price if they are in season.

Rats, I though I had a photo of the crabs as well...

I believe it opens Nov 1. Here are a few I got one morning in about 90 mins.
On another line my trip has been pushed back till the first week in nov. Rock fishing will be close, by dungeness duck, brant, and gees is open. I just finished my last pack of dungeness so it's time to restock.

I got a late start today had a broken rudder pin. The conditions were foggy this morning and one of my partners didn't show. I did manage a decent ling. I didn't even go around Trinidad head. Got him on. 4oz thumper squid purple and green. I like these jigs and the assist hooks don't get hung on rocks as easily.
26" 12lbs
Conditions:
Foggy, cold, 10 mph winds
Water temp 51 f
Depth 21ft sandy bottom 10-15 from a rock structure.
