Save money to get color. It makes a big difference knowing the composition of what you are looking at.

Thats what I am struggling with, what does the color show?

Differentiates hard vs soft
Very important especially when looking for bottom fish the softer sand would look yellow as the rock bottom or harder bottom would look darker, more like red

X3 It makes a big difference in interpretation of hard and soft structure. If you can't afford the difference than drop to a Elite 4x hdi and give up GPS for better Sonar. GPS is not as important as seeing whats under you. Important is to make sure on either model you get the one with the 83/200 and 455/800 khz so it can get the sonar and dsi signals.
