Kayaker in distress
I just wanted to share with you all that at approximately 8:45am a call went out from a distressed Kayaker near the entrance to the Los Alamitos bay. Winds were 30-40 mph wind out of the n/e with 2-3ft windchop! Long Beach Police helicopter located Kayaker and directed LBPD boat to rescue the Kayaker. Kayaker taken to Alamitos bay with mild hypothermia. Please use caution when going out in the wind.

Wind has been howling all day. Why would you even go out?
|
I was there a few weeks ago and winds picked up quick to 20mph. I tried to paddle back to my launch point but it was useless... That wheel cart saved my life when I wheeled it about a quarter mile back on the street.

Not to rag on anyone Else's misfortune, but the guy should have known better.

Wow talk about a waist of tax dollars. Anyone with any common sense would have stayed home today.

The last waist of dollars I saw were on a stripper. |
Wow, no kidding. I'm hoping it calms down by this weekend.

Maybe we can all learn something from this misfortune. What do people on here use to check sea conditions? Maybe someone can post some websites or apps.

Weather underground app. Very accurate most of the time

It's not very scientific. After my close call back on the Rock Fish Derby I have a new set of guidelines that I will follow. Rain is not big deal, I can handle that, but if the water is beyond rough, you stay on land. Use your eyes more than anything, and check the weather reports as well. This high wind advisory has been in place for days now. I know the saying goes, "Any day fishing is better than a good day at work." Not if you're putting your life on the line it's not.
Opinions aside, here's the tools I use Weather reports Tide charts wave predictions my own vision and common sense listen to the weather report on your VHF radio before launching I hope the guy is safe, and all is well here on out. |
I use and App called "Wind Alerts". Forecast out at least a week ahead and in 2-3 hour increments. And any tide chart app available.

I wonder if he caught anything?

If only he had a sail, but heck yeah I would be more scared of my wife.

I still fish... but on a lake where I know I can reach the shoreline :^)
I've got paddling guns that can go double-digit miles before fatigue, but I won't go out to sea with high winds or strong currents.... a good recipe for disaster. |
Going out in windy conditions is nuts
Going out alone when there are high wind warning is just plain stupid. |

If that's stupid..what's going out in the wind during a major storm at night by yourself....then? |
Perfect halibut drifting conditions :leaving:
