First time on the water
And I didn't catch anything lol
My name is Humberto, am 24yrs old and reside in the SFV. Just got my first kayak ever and decided to head out to try it out. I drove by county line and sure enough it looked pretty rough just like I read so decided to try out corral beach per suggestions at the tackle shop. The waves were much smaller but still manged to flip a couple times! Kayak didn't seems stable the first 30 minutes but after a while I started feeling more comfortable. The third time I was able to get past the waves without to much hesitation. Anyway, I was going around the kelp and that's when I realized I suck at casting with a conventional reel. The only fishing I ever did previously was with spinning reels. No matter what I tried, I couldnt get the tady 45 to go more than 10yds with a tld 15 on #30 mono. Also side questions Is there an affordable or easy diy keel guard for the tarpon 140? Where and how can I read wave height forecasts? It was a good experience overall and I plan on going out next weekend. http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2d9ff9b6.jpg No garage for me. I have an apartment. http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4c4ac4cf.jpg |
I would suggest a few things that will be more important.
Practice launching at Leo which is near county line. Not sure what have you the idea to try that as first launch. Practice casting sitting down in the park with a tennis ball or a torpedo sinker Search the forum here as you will find everything already discussed a few times plus get to read some entertaining pissy matches about asking for squid locations etc :) Btw not sure why you flipped but I would not recommend bringing a toddler and a puppy when you head out. Adds to much weigh and could be why you flipped. I could be wrong. Welcome! |
I use Surfline and Surf report for surf and tidal forcasts.

Thanks guys.
Yeah I would never take my daughter on the kayak when going btb or even fishing anywhere. Anyway I knew I wasn't going to launch at cl but I was curious. As soon as I saw the surf, I didn't even get out of the car lol |
You'll get the conventional casting thing down with practice. Doesn't hurt to take your spinning rig with you too, if that's what your comfortable with. Make sure you have the appropriate safety gear. Welcome to the site and have fun out there.
