MissileTM 09-23-2014 10:59 AM

Jim,
Starts Friday night at Midnight or 12:00:01 Saturday morning, Right?

No hoops in the water before then, even if you are "crabbing"???

Thanks again for the great seminar last year and your book that got me addicted to hoopin! :lobster:

ful-rac 09-23-2014 11:31 AM

Hoops in the water is ok, you just can't bag any lobsters until after midnight.

Saba Slayer 09-23-2014 12:16 PM

Hoops in the water...

Hoops in the water before midnight IS NOT OK!!!
Sure you can tell the Warden that you are hooping for crabs...But unless he's in a really good mood for a story...you'll be getting a ticket. You MAY win in court...but that means you've got to take a day off of work and lose the day's pay to fight the ticket. Is it worth it...?
The season is almost 6 months long, why push the issue and harass an already overloaded warden? They already have enough on their plate without having to deal with a bunch of quasi-lawyer knuckleheads. I catch as many Bugs in November and December as I do in October or September.
There is a reg change coming our way in the 16-17 season concerning the time of the recreational opener. It was talked about at length in the Lobster Fishery Management Plan meetings. 6pm. Friday night or 6am. Saturday morning is the type of start time they are exploring. This is exactly one of the reasons the wardens mentioned. They are well aware of what goes on and are tired of the B.S. and they expressed it in the meetings!
Hoops in the water or a diver in the water before Midnight is a definite Red Flag and you'll have a confrontation with a Warden if there is one around...Again...is it worth it for a few extra minutes?

Saba, thanks for the info!

MissileTM 09-23-2014 12:52 PM

Yeah, thanks Jim. I never wanna piss of a guy with gun and a badge...

ful-rac 09-23-2014 01:15 PM

Right. Technically it should be ok to have hoops in, but is it worth it...? like jim says probably not. I will usually hoop Saturday night, so there's no doubt if your hoop'n in season.

I'm really curious as to how the warm water is gonna effect the hoop'n....? Hmmmm?

wiredantz 09-23-2014 01:25 PM

I would never lay my hoop nets before midnight. *I would never fish in any MLPA Zone that they took under our noses. I would certainly always fish Malibu. *

My buddy and I are planning on heading out on the water Friday night (late) so we can pull traps after midnight. So...

Question: Can you drop your hoop nets in the water before midnight (Friday Night) and let them soak (for less than the 2hr. max of course) and pull them after midnight (so now technically it's Saturday / opening day)?
I saw some talk of this on a fishing forum and still do not feel like I have a clear answer. Can you please clarify whether or not this is "OK" or "a ticket waiting to happen"?

We are hoop netting in the Southern California area.

Thanks in advance,

Jon

to me, Wildlife
No.

You cannot drop hoop nets (be careful with your words here - in one sentence you use the word "traps", which may not be legally used to take lobster) with the intent to take lobster before 000 hours on September 27. If you were to drop your hoop nets before midnight, legally you could not retain any lobsters in those nets even if you pulled them after midnight.

Ed,

Thank you for the quick reply. I meant "hoop nets" and not "traps".

It just seemed on the forum like some people on the forum were not clear how to interpret this. I now have "clarity" on the this and will be dropping my "hoop nets" a few minutes after midnight.

Thanks again,

Jon

Just wanted to say thanks to Jim for hosting the seminar today at Turners.

It was great to meet a couple people from BWE as well as pick up some tips on catching some bugs.

Saba Slayer 09-25-2014 09:51 AM

Batman

Thanks Batman and nice meeting you Cbad Mike.
That was a fun seminar...Lori is always a good hostess...We gave away 4 hoop-nets and 4 hoopnet kits last night along with a bunch of other gear in the raffle, and everyone got a Promar beanie and a license holder in their swag bag.
Wow...that sale price they had last night on the sabiki sticks was outrageous!

Tonight's seminar at Sav-On Tackle should have a bunch of raffle items too...Roger usually kicks in some gear and I've got an Ambush and Pro Kit along with some hats and Pautzke's Fuel and the same swag bags with Promar beanies and license holders for the first 40 folks.
I'll bring my Hobie PA setup with the Scotty Puller and a Scotty Trap-ease and a PVC rack on it too.

Please introduce yourself as being from the BWE board as it's always nice to meet you guys in person. If your on BWE...please let me know and I've got a few copies of KayakFish magazine for you guys and maybe a hat too.

I went to the Savon Tackle where I met Jim. I'll pass
along what I learned about Jim to all my friends. Yani

Well... I wouldn't go that far. We might as well live in Nazi Germany if we live our lives in fear of law enforcement.

I don't fear law enforcement. I respect law enforcement.
