Rigging Hoops - Tying Polyethylene Knots
 

I am having trouble finding information on tying knots that won't slip using 1/4" polyethylene rope, such as sold by Promar.

Previously used braided loops for rigging with larger diameter poly ropes.

Need to switch to thinner rope to cut down on drag/weight and to rig some new gear. I don't want to tie the wrong knot, have it slip, and loose everything.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is this for your hoop net?

If so a simple "improved" clinch knot, or figure eight will work.

I use three zip ties to secure the tag end to the main line after the knot and wrap the whole thing in plumbers waterproof tape.

No problems yet.

Same one that is on all my nets. Secured the tag end with a zip tie and all good. Had a net get stuck and asked a power boat to pull it out, the bridle rope broke and the knot still held so I would have to say it works

Are you using the yellow hollow poly rope? That's what I use for my hoop nets, I've been using it for years and have never had it slip where I braid it to make the loop(s). Most of my hooping is done in depth of 40' or less or anything deeper than 75'. If I'm in 40' or less its one line but if I'm in crab waters (typically 75' - 100'+) I will loop another piece or two. I've tried using the 100' pieces in the shallower waters but its to much work trying to keep the excess line tied together, I like to keep it simple. Additionally, because the line is braided into a loop it allows the two pieces that I looped together to go through my Trapeze without getting hung up by a knot.I'm sure there are others way to do it but for me this is the easiest way.

Thanks for the help guys and quick responses. I must have skipped out of school to go fishing on knot tying day.

I switched from Eclipse to Ambush and needed to re-rig.

I rebraided loops in my yellow hollow braid thicker ropes and used the SD jam knot on the other rigs as I didn't trust putting loops in the smaller 1/4" rope.

Also took your advice and reduced the overall rope length.

Next step is to build a better rack for the smaller hoops.
