Drift Anchors
 

Being somewhat new to this sport,
a question has come up . Does anybody here use a drift sock while fishing ? If so what size would you recommend. Thanks...doug

I don't know a single person that uses these out here for the fishing we do... Glad I never purchased one when I started.

PM wiredantz. He uses a drift sock, kelp clip, sail, motor, pontoons, kitchen sink, spare kayak, etc. You name it, it's on his kayak.

Can be very beneficial if specifically drifting for halibut in either strong current, or strong winds. Really helps with slowing down the drift in these conditions, and if using anchor trolley in conjunction it will direction your kayak the way you want to drift. I've pulled mine out on many occasions. And I believe mine is 5 feet.

I know tons of people who use these on the left coast.

I have a Crack of Dawn drift sock with weights sewn into one side of the opening so it deploys as soon as it hits the water. I have owned it over 10 years and use it a lot.

I don't fish with momo or his crew, but I know a lot of people that use them and I am glad I purchased mine.

A drift sock was a great tool before I had a Hobie...now I just power drift into the wind and use both hands to fish and steer while peddling slowly.
I also found that when the wind picked up enough to use the drift sock it was usually time to start heading in anyway cuz the conditions were deteriorating and it was only going to get uglier.

I like a drift chute when halibut fishing in the wind. It slows you down so you can use less weight as well as let you tune the angle of the boat for easiest fishing. I use mine occasionally in LJ for the same reasons. Mike
