Phenix Rod Owners......
Looking to pick up a Phenix rod for Yellowtail and need some advice of which one to pick up. I'm looking at the Black Diamond series. Want a rod for mainly surface irons.
What are you Phenix owners using? Also what reel to pair up with? Here is the website to the Black Diamond Series. http://www.phenixrods.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=3 I'm thinking about <table class="specstable" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="1"><tbody><tr><td>PSW-760M</td><td>7'6"</td><td>15-40</td><td>1</td><td>Mod. Fast</td></tr></tbody></table> Thoughts and reviews about these rods for Yellowtail set up? |
Tons of phenix chatter over at bloodydecks.
I have the PSW 809XHJ and can recommend that model as a surface iron and terrific all around rod. I have a daiwa BG35 on mine. That rod you mentioned is a bit of a noodle... way too soft to be a surface iron/kelp/yt rod. |

Thanks for the input!! Will do more research and go check out the rods in person. |

I 2nd the 809 XHJ. Beast of a rod. I have a Tranx on mine. I've never whooped a yt so easily before that set up. |
I have the classic swimbait 7'11" paired with a 400D. Pretty versatile. From yellows on the tady to stripers on the hudd.

I have 2 phenix's that I bass fish with and they are great rods. When it comes to YT, I'm not sure I would want to invest that kind of dough in a phenix when there are other rods that will do a great job. just food for thought.

The only phenix I own is a psw869h and find it a bit too stiff for surface iron.

i also have the MX-UR80MH swimbait m1 that is paired with revo winch g3 i use for everything else from spotted bay bass to smaller YT it will even throw surface irons and big baits for calicos |
I picked up a Phoenix abyss 908 last year and have been impressed. Its rated for 30 lb, which lighter than i usualy like my jig sticks to be. But My other long rod is a seeker ulua and I wanted to start casting smaller irons n waxwings. Rods is soft and parabolic and cast small irons very well. I started with a Trini 16n and found it was way too much reel for the rod. I was thinking of a lexa 400 but got a deal on a Trini 12. Thinking the 12 will be perfect. Hope this kinda helped. Mike

I picked up the Phenix Abyss 809 about 3 years ago. Great rod, I paired it up with the tranx and switched it out for the Lexa 400. Great for irons, swim baits, and pretty much kayaking and charters. Can't go wrong with the lightness of the rod but yet still flexible enough where it doesn't hurt your back.

I have a Phenix psw-807ml and psw-700h & love em both. For surface irons I'd look at a longer rod -- 8' or 9' -- maybe a psw-909h or one of the Black Diamond Hybrids. Try pulling on a few at your local tackle shop to see what works best.
