Noobie question
 

Hi everyone! I'm new to kayak fishing and I have a few questions after reading through the forum.

Has anyone brought a small inflatable boat along? I thought about have my son ride in the rear of my Trident ultra and then inflating a small wal-mart boat for him to fish from. Am I missing something important, or would this work?


I also read about the proper way to land a halibut from the kayak. There was a lot of talk about proper gaff technique. What if I used a straight gaff with a flopper, like speargun spears? Never caught a halibut, so it might be a dumb question, but the thread just got me thinking.

I used to take my son (he was 7 or 8) I owned an exfactor. Safety first. Take time ti figure out how you'd save yourself before bringing him along. And if you stay in the harbor or bay maybe less to worry about.

I personally would stay in the bay/harbor as DanaPT said. I wouldn't want my kid in anything inflatable in the open ocean

One stray hook, a spine from a hooked fish or a bump from the home guard hammerhead and psssssssst down goes your kid

Not worth it to me. I wouldn't feel safe with him/her on anything inflatable unless it was in the harbor

Good points. Maybe I'll just stick to the lagoon when I want to tow the kids.

I wouldn't be as worried on something rigid. Just not on something inflatable

Maybe just keep your son on your kayak. Put a seat or pad in the tank well. I had a Malibu extreme and would put one kid on the gator hatch seat n one on a strapped down 5 gallon bucket in the tank well. Draging an inflatable raft would suck too. Mike

I've shot plenty of halibut with a Hawaiian sling with a toggle or break away head. Should work on a kayak as well. Itvwould act like a barbed cage spear. Mike
