Calstar 270H Vs 870
Curious as to what the difference is in these two rods. Both rated 15-40 in the WC series.
Any info would be appreciated. I notice the 270H tends to be in an 8' rod and the 870 in a 7'. But from what I understand the 270 is typically a 12-25# blank while the 870 is p much always a 15-40# blank. Thanks. |
I have both.
The 270H is a faster taper and really a 20LB rod in my opinion. A big fish on this rod will beat you up because of the length and the taper. I like fishing calicos and smaller model yellows on it. I got 35LB yellow on it once and was done for the day. I usually fish 25 or 30 on my 870s. It is a slower taper and easier to fish in my opinion. I fish these rods a lot. I have landed blue fin to about 40LB on these. Mostly fly lined baits. If you rent a rod on an overnight boat out of SD, you get a 870 most of the time. It is a nice all around rod that can go as low as 20LB and up to 30LB. I wouldn't fish 40 on it. If I am fish 40 I go to the 670. Tom |
Thanks Tom. That's pretty much what I was looking for. :you_rock:

Cool to see these blank numbers are still in use today. I wrapped the original Sabre 270 and 870 as part of my Albacore entourage back in the late 70's. An 8ft 270 sounds like a substitute for the Sabre 220.
