Is this guy for real?
I hope he has a compass or GPS.
It also looks like he is alone.
I wouldn't go out in that weather.
Looks like he has been waiting for the weather to clear.

I just saw him before I read your post thinking the same thing.... Hopefuly he is waiting for it to burn off

Now he has company.
Am I the only one who sees this as unsafe?

dorf 12-01-2008 10:34 AM

Wisdom won.
He just started pulling his gear.
I hope the guide and his client fair well on there ride.

FISHIONADO 12-01-2008 10:36 AM

I would have gone.

No biggie.....

Rental kayak tourists ....

A local kayak fisherman with a depth-finder (or someone who can count the cranks of the handle on the reel :)) is one thing, even without a GPS or compass, maybe fishing up north in the pier area and staying in relatively shallow water. The fish could care less about the fog, wind, and most weather that make fisherman go back to bed, especially when fishing on the bottom ;).

Now, for tourists with very little ocean experience, and no electronics in pea-soup fog....I'll be watching the news tonight :D.

I launched early and it never let up. If you have good marks on the GPS and go in with a plan, it can be done safely.

even 'crazy-3:30-AM-walks-in-the-surf-with-jeans-on-every-morning-guy' looked at me like I was crazy.

Ahhhh, the good ol' "pot calling the kettle black" scenario, I love it :D. Any big fish on deck that weren't troubled by the fog, but didn't appreciate an experienced angler short pumping them to the surface with a hook burried in the corner of their mouth?

Reminds me of a story of someone going out for Bugs in the same conditions...

Stories are RAD:D

Love my GPS and compass as backup incase the electronics fail! Makes those conditions doable:reel:

dorf 12-02-2008 05:47 AM

As long as you are prepaired and know what you are doing. This guy yesterday was smart enough to evaluate the situation and come to a conclusion that was to his advanage. I would not have gone out alone in those conditions even though I and comfortable with the use of my GPS and compass. I would worry about the motorized Jack Asses out there that would use me as a speed bump.
Be safe out ther my friends.

Guys launching safely (or not) into that stuff is what keeps boards like this alive. IMO there are other better online forums for rod and reel discussion, to sell something, and to get into childish arguments:the_finger:. Even the name and slogan of this site, "BWE- Kayak Fishing Adventures", implies that there should be some sort of kayak fishing adventures shared:reel::paddleersmilie:. This board would suck balls if no one ever posted a report, or if people only posted a report from when it is nice and sunny with no wind. All of the pseudo lurkers that get by with only posting something like "Nice :yt:" every once in a while would be bored out of their mind. Yes, you should post "Nice :yt:" sometimes, but follow my lead and sprinkle in a few reports every now and then about how to not catch fish:rolleyes:. Without reports, this would be like some sort of weird Circle Jerk, with people congratulating each other on fish that were never caught and continually seeing the same posts about what kayak gear is the best (use the search function people!).

Above all, be safe, use discretion, know your limits, respect mother nature, catch some fish (or not catch fish in my case), and most of all- Respect the new lobster smilie beeyatches!!!!!!

We ended up stuck in Denver for the night Monday, because they apparently closed Lindberg Field Monday due to the heavy fog and cancelled our flight. (It was all good as it gave us 2 more days with family on the airlines bill!)

I have to agree with Dorf though, especially after my last adventure. I think it can be done safely with the proper equipment, but you have no control over the PBs and larger vessels that may not see our speed bump asses!
