Yes its been sharks and little else in the news, "Shufoy" the guy that puts up the West Aussie adventures was fishing in the same bay as where popular local fishing identity Brian Guest was taken by a Great White yesterday morning,,it was errie that the kayakers were checked out the Great White same time of the day on the opposite side of the country,,,theres been a high number of sightings this summer so far.

Heres Brian with a Tailor (Bluefish) recently,,Shufoy and myself will be heading down the beach tommorow afternoon for a memorial service .

Sorry to hear about Brian.
------------------------

Those were some tense moments indeed.

I noticed the Hobie Revo had its finns in the straight downward position, I wonder if the shark thought it was a big fish. The rudder would look like a tail fin as well.

It took a hard look at the kayak when it was perpendicular.

wow...

Incredible story, very glad no one was hurt in the end.

That video is amazing...

It is very cool that the guys stuck together and stayed calm. That's the way to go.

In regards to our local death (Brian) we had a great turnout of family and friends near the beach last night,,it was a happy and upbeat evening as folks talked bout Brian and told each other fishing storys and had a few drinks,,Brian said if he ever gets taken by a shark so be it (said this a year ago), as for the Longly shark incident,,two yakkers involved have been back out since and got a nice haul of Kingfish :)

Heres Amy talking about her father and the sun goes down on a special day in the West.

Yes the part where it appears Hobies were targeted was interesting,,mind you the Hobies out numbered the others,,still might be an idea to paddle away rather than peddle if a shark checks us out to be on the safe side.

If you don't mind me asking, what was Brian doing when he was attacked by the shark?

dgax65 12-29-2008 09:42 PM

According to the reports that I saw, he was diving for crab.

Thats right Doug,,i have not read the link but its a popular past time to snorkel for crabs (blue swimmer crabs or blue mannas as they are known locally) some folks wade the shallows with a scoop net as well and get them that way,,,i imagine he might have had a welding glove on and a catch bag for his crabs,,,,,,,,,i guess the flippers he was wearing makes him look like a seal or something perhaps,,,

Not sure if i mentioned it but he saw one in the same area 1 year ago from the beach,,he loved the experience it was said,,,,,,,,,

Have wondered if its the one that got him,,,no sign of his body yet only a small piece of wetsuit .

Another encounter yesterday now far from where Brian was taken,,a GW circled the boat, a couple were in as they were pulling crab pots up, fisheries say its not the same one (how do they know,??? it reported as the same size)

The couple called it a day and upped anchor and headed home for a cold beer or two (the shark had moved on):)

First media reports were a couples boat was sunk by a GW and a fisheries boat saved them in the nick of time

Shorty - hate to say it but I think there is a perception that white sharks are all over the coasts of Australia. But reading these few posts along with the links, they make it sound like they are somewhat uncommon. Is this true? We had a swimmer attacked locally in Solana Beach which was extremely rare, we had never really had a documented attack in San Diego before. If it happened in Northern California, no one would have thought twice about it. But I always assumed that white sharks were everywhere in Australia.

Shorty 12-31-2008 04:17 PM

Fairly uncommon for folks to be attacked ,,about every 4 years in Western Australia i guess,,i think the "Men in White" stick to the lower half of Australia being they like the colder water,,,,,,,,,,,

Tiger sharks on the other hand are all around Australia and have a nasty bite as well,,,,,,,,,,
