making bait in the bay?

I know there are the bait barges in San Diego and Mission Bays, but I was curious if it is possible to make bait with a sabiki rig in the bay itself? [for Halibut fishing] Thanks!

it is possible, i've been able to make some macks and surface smelt in the big bay but the hard part is finding them...not worth the time IHMO.

a kayak scoop at the barge is like 10bucks, which is more bait than you could use...just make sure you have a good tank to keep them alive.

I have had good luck making smelt chumming crumbled hot dog buns and then dropping the sabiki.

Wow! I never knew smelt were made of hot dog buns. And, mackeral, what are they made of?

thanks for the replies fellas. sounds like its worth a shot on days when I want to supplement the halibut offerings with a few live baits. I have heard the crackers/bread chumming trick, will try it.

I have caught plenty of macs and smelt in the bay on a sabiki. Also try a small hook with a strip of squid, macs will eat it up!
