FIRST KEEPER
 

My friend and I went out of Dana Harbor around 7:00 am. We went straight to the kelp. Before I hit the kelp I dropped the bait down and slow bounced the the weight on the bottom and hooked up to a 33" Halibut. Trolled over to the same spot and hooked another Halibut. Had him and the gaff and noticed that the gaff was not all the way through. So this other kayaker was going to help me when the Halibut started flopping around and got off the gaff. I was Pissed and was cussing alot.
Started heading in around 11:00 when the water got choppy. Trolled inside the harbor along the wall towards the bait barge and caught the bass and a short berracuda. Then it was hell getting back in. This one guy even fell of his kayak by the beach. The Halibut was bleeding when he got off, so if any one sees him floating around, call me. LOL It's mine I said.

Does any body know how many pounds a 33" weights. Next time I'm taking a scale and a club.

kinda like askign how a 5 foot human weighs, some have big heads, some dont, some are fat, some arent!

Your Halibut pictured is around 14-16lbs. The last one i caught that was 33inches weighed 16lbs but his head and mouth was smaller than yours.

Nice first flattie! Generally you can estimate by the last number in inches to guess the weight of a halibut: 24"=4lbs, 29"= 9 lbs, etc. That's usually fairly accurate within a pound or two until you get to the 35" mark and above as they get wider and/or thicker from there on out. I once saw a 33" that weighed 20 lbs, but that's rare. Your fish is likely anywhere from 12-16 lbs. Who cares what it weighs though, nice sized flattie by any measure!

Nice one! Filleting your first halibut is an adventure too but is a skill soon mastered.
I am going to dana tomorrow,I hosed the black widows out of the Yak since it hasnt seen water for 2 months...

I was using a 3oz. weight on a dropper loop with a circle hook. The bait was a dine.
