Calico bass setups
I was wondering what kind of rod and reels do You guys use for Calico bass? Types of reels, and size? Also what type of rods do You guys recommend or has worked well for you? What pound test line do you recommend?
Thank You for your help. Robbie |
I fish a 7'6" medium heavy Shimano Terramar with a Shimano Calcutta 400. I like 25 lbs test Izorline mono, or 65lbs test Power Pro in green.
For slugs and my larger kelp jigs I use a Avet MXJ MC loaded with 65lbs test spectra. |
kid, you're a brute force... :)
what are you using for yellows, 200# test? :D Those little Calcuttas are sweet. When I mess with calicos, I use my sabiki rod, regular lighter rod. Got 12-15# test, mono. I like it as I can cast rubber far away, work the stringers. Can be fun fishing with a lot of action in the summer especially. As calicos wiggle and you keep the pressure on the fish, they mostly seem to work their way out of the weeds; lighter line is fine. Little suspended anchovy can be a poison for them, hard to get on a yak though. |
For summer calico fishing I like my Castar 90J/Newell338 combo loaded with 30lb Izor and a bird plop colored Tady 45. Mike

Seeker inshore 708-7, Calcutta 400, 15#, Seeker inshore 706-7, Calcutta 250, 12#. I have the original Seeker cork handle rods. I don't like the new blue ones.

PescadorPete, I totally agree with You about the new blue seeker inshore rods. Can I order the blank of that rod and have it custom rapped?
|
Yes, you can order those Seeker inshore blanks and roll your own.
|
Thank you MarkT. That's what I am going to do.

Haha I don't give em a fighting chance. I like to rip them into the boat before they know what hit them. :D |
Those are the first two rods I bought when I moved here in '00 (not knowing any better being a bestcoast newbee). Maybe some guy named Jim pointed me in that direction :). They have turned out to be a couple of my favorites. I broke a guide on one and took it to Squidco to get it fixed. They re-wrapped the guide with the same Seeker thread colors and you just can't tell the difference. Squidco rocks.
