Lobster measuring while in the net.

GOOD NEWS FOR HOOP NETTERS
Measuring lobsters in the water isn't a problem for recreational divers but hoop netters need another method to stay legal. Fish and Game Regulations [Section 205(c)] prohibit bringing an undersized lobster aboard any boat. In bringing hoop nets aboard with potentially short take, recreational anglers could unintentionally violate this section.
At yesterday's Fish and Game Commission meeting in San Diego, The Sportfishing Conservancy's April Wakeman asked the California Fish and Game Commission to modify this regulation. Citing both practical and safety concerns she advocated for the measurement of lobsters on board with any found to be undersize to be immediately returned to the water. The request received strong support from the Commission and the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
This decision was part of the presentation to the FGC of the proposed Lobster Fishery Management Plan (FMP). Despite the recommendation of the Lobster Advisory Committee, the Department saw no reason at this time to restrict the recreational use of mechanical pullers so their use, if the plan is approved as presented, will continue to be legal. Regulations to support the FMP will be presented at the Commission's February meeting. Comments can be made to the Commission or to The Sportfishing Conservancy and we'll pass them on.
Remember, the new regulation is still in process and hasn't been approved - yet!
Tight Lines,
