You may very well be right...but...
From the versions I've heard about the naming of the island...the early Spanish explorers found big redwood/cedar logs on the beaches. There are no big trees on the island or the water to support them, so the theory is that the Humbolt current carried them South and dropped them at "Cedros".
I got this rumor second hand from some UC Northridge Cedros archeological work through Jeff on the Island.
