Based on his experience, you should check the charts to make sure you understand where the shipping lanes are so you can stay clear, or if necessary cross them at a right angle.

I would do my research before hand and program a route into my FF/Chartplotter.

Alternatively, you can have your kayak hauled out there for you. Also the kayak rental place at Two Harbors has a few fishing kayaks. Prowlers if I remember correctly.
