Being a latch key kids is illegal now. I can't believe how this even happened?!

is it REALLY illegal? man, my sister and I were latch key kids as far back as I could remember. As long as I knew how to DIAL (as in rotary phone) 911, I don't even think my parents worried about leaving us home LOL.
