Shimano 'Saguaro' 14-30 Med Heavy might be a cheap alternative..

Do you think a 14-30 would be enough for YT and throwing irons?

I was under the impression that you needed a more stout rod to throw irons and to prevent the fish from going deep.

Thanks,
-Jay

I have two Shimano Trevalas I'm looking to sell.
I currently use the 6'6 right now to throw Irons, and it gets them out there really well for such a short rod, and It's a great size for the kayak. It's extremely light weight, an although I haven't landed a YT with it yet, I have no doubt in my mind it can withstand it. I've caught a 42# Striped bass and a Football Yellowfin tuna on it. The 7'0" is just as strong, but doesn't have the weight you need to throw Irons, its best suited for soft baits.

PS, Fighting fish is more fun on light tackle! Duh!

Absolutely YES. You can go heavier if you want..
If you felt the rod you'd see why. Your on a yak, and if your not flinging a conventional jig stick set up for surface iron you will need some whip..
A lot of spinning set up once you go into 40-50# it is some huge thick spinning set up for surf fishing!?!..
I have Caught & Landed 150# Threshers with this rod.

So I should look more into a 15-30lb range rod in the m/h action.

I will take a ride out to Bass Pro this weekend to see what they have.

Thanks Wade for the insight.
