What i do is take my spool of mono/fluoro that will be used and make the connection from your braid to mono/fluoro and then make the cut for your leader after my connection is made. That way if i use too long of a tag end for my leader line then i can make the right length leader because i havent made the cut yet. Sucks cutting 3-4 feet off that expensive spool of seaguar and then realizing you effed up the knot now your not going to have enough leader to make it work.

Considering you mention halibut im guessing you will be rigging the dropper reversed. I like using torpedo sinkers when fishing the reverse dropper for halibut. Like you said, current, depth, and wind dictate the size of the sinker.
