In winter I use those sliders since you can easily swap off weights if you want to fish the bottom. In summer I use a 2-3oz egg with a 3-4ft fluoro leader. The carolina setup slides through kelp a little better.

I was using those sinkler slides but it kept twisting and wrapping itself around the line. What did I do wrong

You have to lower them slower. You can't just drop them down or the weight sinks first and the leader wraps up your main line.
