Was the ray snagged? I've never had a ray go for an artificial.

Rays are actually quite the predators. Caught lots on plastics although usually not hooked in mouth most folks agree that if hooked on underside of body the ray was attempting to suck bait in mouth when you set hook.

Hate it when that happens. I only fish artificials and get a few a year. Even had one on the blade last year.

Bat Rays are pretty tasty when prepared properly.
