You will find that your paddle stroke develops over time. Talk to the guys at OEX to help get you into the right paddle for your size and kayak. At first you will be splashing a lot of water, which does not help at all. You will also start to build the muscles that you need for paddling as you learn your stroke. The more time you put into it, the better prepared you will be when and if the SHTF. I have towed completely submerged kayaks with my paddle yak.

Torso rotation! Don't paddle with just your arms. You burn out quick, and it doesn't get you as much power and ease with each stroke as compared to torso incorporation.
