Light regs?

Can anyone tell me if navigation lights are required on a kayak at night?

My gut says not required but you definitely want to be plenty visible. Lots of boats out especially tonight. More than a few people drinking while waiting too. Stay safe!

The Sherrif stopped us one morning leaving DP and laid down the law. A 360deg light and a spotlight you can shine at others. One of us didnt have their headlamp (spot) and but we all had 360s. He let us go as it was going to be gray soon. But he made sure we knew it was his graciousness allowing us to procede w/o the spot.

From pages 24 and 25 of the CA ABC's of Boating...

"Navigation Lights: All vessels are required to display navigation lights between sunset and sunrise and during times of restricted visibility. In inland and international waters, sailing vessels under sail alone shall exhibit navigation lights shown on page 40. The tricolored lantern and the all-round green and red lights should never be used together. A sailing vessel of less than 23 feet (7 meters) in length shall, if practicable, exhibit those lights prescribed or have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall be exhibited in suf cient time to prevent collision. A vessel under oars may display those lights prescribed for sailing vessels or have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light, which shall be exhibited in sufcient time to prevent collision."

I'm willing to bet that they didn't stop you because of the regulations, it had more to do with the fact that they know what happens every year at the start of lobster season. It's kind of like those DUI checkpoints that they put up after every Superbowl, they know people will be drinking and driving so what better way to prevent DUI accidents than to stop them in their tracks

Be safe out there, don't become a statistic.

With all of the boat traffic that we've had lately I'm surprised we haven't had more incidents.
