Depends on how much you are willing to spend. Hobies....expensive. If you want to paddle, check out as many different kinds to see what fits your style and wallet. Check out used ones as you can save some bucks until you figure out what you want. I personally like the tridents as they are both stable and quick with lots of room for add ons.

Definitely try to test some out if possible. Some that work well for some don't for others. I'm not from socal so I'm not sure what your options are, but if you can't find stores to demo kayaks, then at least do your research before buying a kayak and hitting the ocean. Good luck and be safe!
