Well, that sucks.
I'm planning on joining Mahigeer on his trip and was hoping not to waste the days in San Felipe. What's wrong with the fishing there? |

Just look at a map. There’s virtually no structure whatsoever. sF is basically where the salt flats turn into the sea. Like everyone else said. Go south

Thank you for your inputs. Keep them coming please.
Before posting here I had made two "non-cancellable" hotel reservations. October 4th and 11th. San Felipe is a rest stop on the way to see Rossman in Bahia Asuncion. Waaaaaaaaaaaay south. same on the way back. I have only seen the Calimax, the taco place and whatever was in route to Gonzaga Bay. Some sightseeing is in order. Also some adult drinks and locally prepared food could be enjoyed to celebrate life. Going south, then coming back north then going back south next day is little too much driving. Plan is to see Luis on the way and show Cardshark (if he is riding with me) the Mako-ville on the way south. Perhaps a trip to Puertecitos hot springs should be done on the 4th instead of fishing. The tide seems good on the 11th, not too good on the 4th. I also plan to stop at Bahia Santa Rosaliita, where I fished in 2012. Thanks again for your advise. |

Good morning members,
Well since there were a lot of suggestions here to skip San Felipe (SF) for fishing and go south, I did some further thinking about it. It seems that if the travel times work out per Google Maps, we should be in (SF) around 9:00 AM or so. Hotel check-in is at 3:00 PM, so we have (6) hours before checking in to our rooms. And about (10) hours of daylight for fishing and travel. Therefore, we can keep going south to visit Mako-ville and Alfonsino’s. We can do some fishing there from surf and enjoy some meals and drinks. Then back track to (SF) to stay for the night. The next day we can keep going south toward Coco’s Corner and Bahia Asuncion (BA) without stops at Mako-ville and Alfonsino’s as previously planned. This also gives us a little more assurance that we arrive during daylight at (BA). The only drawback is traveling the rough (per my last experience) 74 KM or so of the road south of (SF). We would be traveling that road three times, plus the once on return. We can fish the Alfonsino’s on the way to US too on the 11th. |

Yet there is good fishing there sometimes around the islands. Lots of structure at Bahia de Los Angeles, and Bahia Asuncion. |

On San Felipe-
If I recall correctly from reading Baja catch, the fishing industry just destroyed that area years back, that it never fully recovered, and it stands as a bit of a testament to management practices

You can google the chit out of it or listen to seasoned pros...San Felipe fishing is non existent especially from shore. Fishing STARTS to improve at the northern edge of the Encantada reef (Mako Bobs) and improves from average to incredible the farther you travel down the islands towards San Fransiquito and the islands/reefs at LA Bay and further south.
That's my 2 cents...and I do know what I am talking about |

I would just take the loss on the hotel room and stay at Mako Ville. Save yourself the back and forth driving. Makes a much more liesurely trip with more time to

Where to stay in Mako-ville? Since I am staying with Rossman and there maybe two of us, I am not taking all the necessary items to camp at Mako-ville. Even if there was room in my 4Runner. Forfeiting $200.00 for two separate night’s stay because the fishing is not good for two half days, does not seem right. Hopefully we will have our share of good fishing in Asuncion. On the way back we will stop at Alfonsina’s for fishing before going to San Felipe to check-in. Last edited by Mahigeer; 09-09-2018 at 09:46 AM. |
