If you get stuck in the sand drop your tire pressure to 8 or so lbs. Any time you hit the sand you're tire pressure should be dropped considerably...just carry a compressor for the pavement.
I'm always surprised to see how few people know how to drive in the sand. |

Funny now that he's out, but imagine if he'd gone out a tad farther, and the tide caught him that way. My first trip out to LJ, I towed another BWE member out. Even with an F350, I've gotten stuck. Tourists walking onto the beach, via the OUT side of the triangle, I had to stop and that was that. JOctane was there to pull me out, but now I'm in 4WD everytime.
I tow quite a bit, and keep my psi's in the 76 front/72 rear zone, so inflating back to those pressures from 8-12 would take 15 minutes in itself. Now it's in 4WD for launches. Never again I say. I wonder if that's covered under the "extra insurance" from the rental comps? I can imagine it now..."I was just driving along, when the tide came in"! ![]()

"off road" recovery rarely covered by any insurance or auto clubs. Sometimes it will cost you....had one at Crowley Lake.....$250.
Lesson well learned.....take your friend's truck! |

If you don't get stuck now don't worry about it, but if you find yourself digging in drop the pressure before you get to the rim and you'll likely pull out like it never happened. I've passed giant trucks with huge tires in Glamis every year for the last dozen years, they forget to deflate before they hit the dunes and dig right in, meanwhile I'm in 2wd with 8 lbs of pressure and a ![]() I bet you'd do fine with your 4wd and 25PSI...and it'd be enough to get you safely to the gas station so you can fill up quickly. Speaking of tide, I saw a brand new 4 runner get washed out in Alaska in 1995. They got stuck in the clam beds and the tide came in...SOL. The tides up there move surprisingly fast, it catches people off guard. Sometimes it costs them their lives. |

Momentum is your friend in the sand. When it starts to bog keep on the throttle and turn the wheel to create new tracks for yourself. Then again if you are like most cars and have 1 tire fire your kinda screwed most the time. Gotta love the locker
