Hook series have a $50 rebate right now. These are the same as the previous Chirp, just did away with the useless extra data cable. I have been happy with the Chirp 4, does what I want it to do.

I have the Elite Chirp 5.
Very user friendly, easy to navigate screens and modify sonar setting on the fly once you get the hang of all the options. Nice big screen sure helps and the GPS is really awesome for marking spots. I find myself using the downscan and GPS more than the fishfinder. Be sure that he picks out the correct transducer for the correct conditions he will be using it for. I hear it makes a big difference.
